My old HP seemed to be dying and I wanted a printer that had a duplex function and I went to my local tech store and they sold me this. It’s much bigger and more expensive that I was expecting. It also isn’t effortlessly wireless; I thought it would virtually out of the box. It didn’t even come with an emergency USB cord. Fortunately, I was able to find an old cable lying around the house.
The manual is not clear. In less than a week I ran out of toner (I set the machine for 300 dpi and duplex); but today, the machine just stopped; unlike HP,where you can at least get some light copies for awhile; it stopped dead in its tracks. I went back to the store at 7 this morning and bought a new toner for $91. It’s been one hassle after another and I just spent darn near an hour with Customer Service. They offered me a return but they made it very complicated; I was going to have to put a hold on my card for $50.
If I’d been able to wait I’d have bought it from Amazone which has superb customer service.
I may be returning this.
What a waste time and effort! And at exactly the worst time.

I’ve had this printer for a week or ten days, and it works fine through the USB connection. Fast and decent print quality. I have, however spent hours trying unsuccessfully to network the printer, either wired or wireless. The instructions are terrible and confusing, way beyond any other printer I’ve ever owned. I’m not exactly a novice, as I have networked several other printer brands with no problem. I doubt that I would ever recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this thinking that I could connect it wirelessly to two laptops in an office. What the sales info fails to mention is that it has to be connected to a printer server or router. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have bought it. Frankly, it’s too much trouble to return it….
Tech support goes straight to India. They asked for my mailing address 5 times but couldn’t answer basic questions.
The wireless setup, if you dare try it, is incredibly confusing. I’m usually pretty good with computer accessories, but I gave up quickly on this one. I guess it’s an okay desktop laser printer, but that’s not what I bought it for.
Be careful removing the blue packing tape from the machine. I tore a plastic panel right off the unit. That’s quality.
If I were to buy again, I would look elsewhere.

I am returning this printer. In a nutshell, it’s a nightmare to set up for Macintosh and after SIX ATTEMPTS and 2-3 hours of frustration I finally just gave up. Brother provides two different sets of instructions–one in a printed user’s manual and one in an online PDF (which is completely different). I couldn’t get the thing to work on my wireless Airport network using either set of instructions. They don’t even make an attempt to cater to Mac users in the least. All of the screenshots in the PDF are Windows screenshots, for example, and the technical jargon used through is different from the what we’re used to on the Mac, which requires you to puzzle through the instructions. The instructions don’t include Airport-specific examples, either. In addition, the machine just feels flimsy all over. I bought this printer because of the high-rating it had, but i should have delved deeper into the reviews because it appears I’m not the only Mac user to struggle with this. If you’re on a Mac I’d avoid this printer like the plague. I gave it one star for Ease of Setup and couldn’t rate the other criteria because I never got it to print even one time (except for the system test sheets–THREE of which are required (at least) every time you attempt to set the thing up. Ridiculous.
